Squid Ink!: LA Weekly's Food Blog + Weekend Eats

It's never too late to start a food blog. The Atlantic recently started a top-notch food 'channel', a better word than blog and it's already pumping out some of the best writing and coverage in the country. They've got Corby Kummer, their superb in-house food editor as well as Grant Achatz writing about his most recent thoughts. Twitter can't hold a candle to that.

I've also gotten word that LA Weekly is now pumping out daily content on the LA Food Scene (Eater, eat your heart out..again!) on a blog called Squid Ink. I've met Jessica Ritz of RitzBites and she's a fine writer and a great person. I've also been included in the blogroll, which is humbling as well as challenging - I'll have to continue to pump out my own great content for you readers!

I didn't do a weekend recap in a while so I'll keep it simple:

Friday Night was Green Chartreuse/Mujer Verde cocktails at Bar Keeper in Silver Lake then a meat-less dinner at La Casita Mexicana with Javier of Teenage Glutster (well these days since he's not a teenager it's just "Glutster") as well as Josh of http://www.foodgps.com, Allison (his gf) and Christine (of choisauce and my gf!).

Saturday was a daytrip (long-awaited and much needed) to Santa Barbara, where Christine and I feasted our eyes at the wonderful Santa Barbara Farmer's Market. We gorged on juicy, ripe cherimoyas while Christine munched on a massive head of cauliflower (what a rabbit haha). Later we actually feasted at La Super-Rica, one of the best Mexican joints I've ever been to. Full review of this place coming soon (with some great photos to boot).

After lunch we went to Los Olivos for the "tasting alley". Qupe Winery was first then Saarloos & Sons Family Vineyard, where I had one of the best tasting experiences of my life thanks to Keith Saarloos, then magnanimous scion of a multi-generational winemaking family. Saarloos, as covered by fellow FoodGPS columnist Matthew Kaner, is a small operation that creates hand-crafted wines that truly "sing", exhibiting Saarloos's distinct family character and tradition. The tasting room, opened February 14th, is a beautiful - a superbly designed space.

Later we just picnic'ed at a vista point along the highway and drank Saarloos' Daughters Chardonnay, ate Camberzola cheese (cross between Camambert and Gorgonzola), and watched the sun set.

We watched Great Lake Swimmers at Spaceland at night.

On Sunday we went to the Curry Festival in Thaitown. While we only had one curry, from Simpang Asia (Indonesian cuisine), which incidentally also won the award for best curry (little did we know). We also shared a bowl of sub-par noodles at Sapp Coffee Shop (off their game for some reason), then ended the night with some Cava Rose from Silver Lake Wine.

Good for the Weekly finally getting their blog off the ground (it's been rumored and in the works for months and months), and good to finally have more voices out there. Your 'tude is amateurish. Good blogging only begets more good blogging.

If it wasn't for Eater launching an LA site, no one else would be covering the food scene the same way, i.e., copy what Eater did, i.e. daily dish/food gps/la mag's blog/squid ink etc. We'd still have an overbloated sea of inexperienced food blogs that no one ever read, clogged up with bad photography. You should give props where due. What, did they not hire you or something?

Yeah, I think Jonathan Gold might have mentioned the blog to me before, but I forgot about it. If you knew me, I've always been a critic of Eater, but doesn't mean I don't appreciate what it's done for the city. I personally thanked Lesley Balla for the influence that it's brought to the scene.

Right now Eater is a shadow of itself and while it's still technically the authority and started to gather its pieces again, there are competitors out there that fill in the blanks. And no, they certainly did not hire me because I had zero interest in the position. Also, man up and don't leave an anonymous comment. That leaves you with even less credibility.

Congratulations on the well-deserved spot on the LA Weekly blog roll. I've been eating your blog up these past couple weeks -- I love your writing style! (And the food porn don't hurt either...)
