Tingling Chungking

Had a radical meal last night (sorry for the 80's word) at Chungking Restaurant, where my lips, mouth and throat were numbed from copious amounts of sichuan peppers. Quite an experience. Food was good, though I think it can be better (or I heard that it can be better).

I was reading Molly O'Neill's American Food Writing anthology yesterday on the busride home and I realized how far I have to go before any of the writing I do gets to the caliber of prose that many of those writers are at. It was fun reading Hawthorne's account of an idyllic early American countryside. I discovered that Richard Orney's writing has the same eloquence as a top-flight ballet.

I have a long way to go...but I also have a long queue at the library's hold list, where I can read all the great food writing and look at all the food photos without spending a dime (unless I rack up late fees).

On another note, look at the mess I created on Eater yesterday. Yes, foodiephotog is an alias I'd been using for some time now because of the fiasco that was El Coyote back in 2008. That was a horrible affair and I ended up getting rid of my screenname because I didn't want to be associated with any hate speech or racial slurs (not that I said, but flung around me left and right). Anyways, I've changed back to mattatouille on Eater so you can read my comments there, as well as the ridiculous session from yesterday afternoon:

to my #1 fan,

you can't believe how much i needed to hear that encouragement. i know i have a long way to go before really accomplishing anything in the bigger sense, but if i know that my writing (and love) are enough for you, then i couldn't ask for anything more.

i read this comment about 14 times over and over before printing it out and posting on the dreaded cubicle wall - which is your wall of shame, but to me, a wall of joy. photos, notes, letters, and now this comment - they make my day. (i know you're weirded out by it, but tough - you're too pretty not to look at every 8 seconds)

knowing that you're reading...i'm a fool for not writing more. i love you.

Wow, hard to comment after the first 2 comments =)

Good times last night, but we need to make a return trip to get the water boiled fish/beef/intestines. It's much better IMO and less spicy.

P.S. I'm not sure what happened to the El Coyote case earlier (I figured it's that whole Prop 8 crap), but don't be let down with some idiot on the forum.
