Wurstkuche: Deluxe Sausages & Notable Brews

DSC_0220
My friend Josh Lurie of FoodGPS and I were planning to hit up this Arts District eatery (which means "Sausage Kitchen" in German) after he had heard about their opening a few months ago. Owners are ambitious with numerous beers on tap and creative, gourmet sausages. They opened this past week and received an enthusiastic DSC_0231
I was surprised to see a utilitarian tap on the wall featuring Belgian and German brews, rivaling Verdugo, The York, and even Father's Office on the Westside. Drafts include Chimay White, Delirium Noctumum, Aventinus Doppelbock, Allagash White, and Old Rasputin. They've even got Pabst Blue Ribbon for the local hipsters. A generous selection of high-quality sodas are available with Moxie, Fentimans, and Nuky's Rose, Elderflower, and Cucumber sodas as highlights.

Sausage selections include classics like Bratwurst and Kielbasa, while other interesting links such as Filipino Marcharlica, Mango/Jalapeno Chicken, and Chicken/Apple/Spices dot the wide selection. We indluged in two of exotics: Duck/Bacon and Rattlesnake/Rabbit, both of which are laced with Japalenos for a kick.

Duck and Bacon Sausage was neslted in a bready bun and was nicely charred from the grill. Meat was slightly drier than expected and didn't have a strong bacon flavor, but it was still delicious. We asked for grilled peppers and onions on the side so not to adulterate pure meat flavor. Mustard and ketchup were options we didn't take.

Rattlesnake & Rabbit would make an adventurous eater proud though the flavor wasn't as scary as the ingredients seem. It wasn't gamey but rather rich and juicy. The nice skin on the link lent to a superb texture and balanced flavor with the jalapeno keeping on the downlow.

Thick Belgian-style fries came in a cute little cone and was sided with walnut-blue cheese-bacon (yet again).

With a solid sausage concept with a unique beer selection to boot, Wurstkuche looks to be a mighty fine addition to the Arts District in Downtown LA's northwest shadow.

The owners of Wurstkuche also showed us around the back where a hoppin' bar and dance area should give the area a nice needed nightlife boost. The area is still under construction and should need a good three months to open to the public though that number is pending some permitting from the city.

Wow the photos look amazing. Am I drooling on the page? O=9**

I am with you on tasting the original flavor of the sausage first. I will have to add this place to try and drag someone there to eat the adventurous rattlesnake/rabbit sausage and sneak a bite. ^_^

Wurstkuche was a veritable zoo of encased meats, further evidence that humans occupy the top of the food chain. Rattlesnake wasn't nearly as "exotic" as I would have imagined. It's actually a luscious white meat. Joseph and Tyler also displayed true commitment to bacon, which is always appreciated. It flecked the duck sausage. Bacon even found its way into a blue cheese walnut dip for the hot fries.

bacon galore. bacon for breakfast, bacon for lunch, bacon for dinner, and bacon for dessert. dare I say bacon is the cheaper foie gras for adding to nearly everything? (possibly better?)

You beat me to it Matt! I was in last week, met Joseph, and he bought us some beers and gave us a tour. Great place, nice people, it's gonna do well. Did you know you can buy those sausages and take them home too? I think they said they were $2 less if you wanted just a sausage to take home and cook yourself.
