Yo Yo Restaurant: Like Yo Momma's Food

Alright, I'm switching from near-haute Craft to the plebeian Yo Yo Restaurant, a beloved "snack corner" as Koreans would call, in a strip mall that could very well be in Koreatown except that it's in Glendale. I've been frequenting the place ever since my dad's office used to be a hop skip away. I stopped by on a lazy Sunday morning for some comfort food after eating two straight weeks of bank-expensed fare.

Don't you love Engrish? Oh Deng is a fish cake soup fyi and best paired with dduk bok ki on a cold autumn day. Classic Korean street food (yes, we'll eat the soup on the street too).

Kal-gook-soo is literally knife-cut noodles. I grew up on this stuff when my mother would make it fresh for a quick dinner. Inside is diced fish-cake slices, miscellaneous vege, and topped with shredded laver. The broth is slightly velvety and best with additional seasoning from dipped kimchi.



I had one of my all-time favorite dishes: yook hwe jjang, which was actually surprisingly good. I didn't expect much but this hearty stew had everything: soft, stringy beef with strands of clear potato noodles, scallion, and korean root (I forget the name). The spicy broth was rich and hot, exactly how I like it.



Banchan was standard issue and that isn't a bad thing at all. A neat addition is the pepper or "goh-chu" which is a fresh, crunchy contrast to the pickled vegetables. Yo Yo has very reasonable prices and is open seven days a week. When you want something close to your mom's food (or any Korean mom if you ain't Korean), you couldn't do much worse than than Yo Yo.
