Rock Sugar: Dreamy Desserts

My friend Daniel recently relocated from Rock Sugar to Craft (impelled mainly by our initial visit there a few months ago). Though the food is solid at the Cheesecake Factory owned restaurant, Daniel recommended the desserts. We skirted the tofu cheesecake and opted for the doughnuts and banana dessert. Hot french-press coffee kept it balanced and we enjoyed this tasty sweet there-after in this moody and elegant dining room.

The coconut donuts were slightly chewy but dipped in the passionfruit sauce they were quite tasty. I think they could have been a little warmer and fresher.

This dessert was a showstopper, with creamy chocolate ice cream with banana custard wedged between crisps, we devoured this in minutes. A nice creme anglaise and praline peanuts added textural complexity (aka creamy crunch).

Both desserts cost a hefty $8.50 but were large enough to be shared by four people. Last pic is the fresh coffee, a perfect complement to the desserts above.

Nice! Were you able to try their other non-dessert foods? Being a cheesecake affiliate, I was sure the desserts gonna be a safe bet -- but a bit more skeptical about the rest of the menu (esp. since they're diving into the Pan-Asian Fusion concept).

h.c., honestly, I wouldn't be able to say but I think they do have some good dishes. The shortribs are a good bet. Generally I wouldn't say that this place is worth the money or really worth visiting since there are so many better real-ethnic places to visit in LA, but the decor inside is really nice and the service seems to be spot-on. Generally I stray away from chain restaurants, but they're out there and sometimes worth talking about.

When I was there that night the chef came out to say hi to my friend and greet our table. The exec chef used to work at Spice Market in NY, hence the similarity of menus. To see the chef in the house on a Friday night is always a good thing.

Oh my god how I love donuts. Although I'm not such a big fan of coconut, so it sounds like the chocolate ice cream/banana pudding desert is the one to go with.

I must admit I do, in secrecy, love the beignets at Grand Lux, another cheesecake affiliate (plus it's open past midnight) - so I can imagine the desserts here may have similar crave-worthy items.
Maybe I'll stop by for sweets when I'm at that mall :)

heidenkind: donuts are my love. I used to be able to eat 6 krispy kremes in one sitting (back in the college days). NY has their bagels, LA has donuts.

gourmetpigs: i think its funny that foodies have to secretly like chain restaurants...hahah, but they can make good food too! (sometimes, not all the time)
