Panaderia La Estrella Nueva: Lovely Mexican Pastries

DSC_0075

Walking around Al Langer Square in Westlake at the intersection of 7th and Alvarado reminds one much of a buzzing city corner in Mexico. It might also resemble an anonymous block in Queens, NY as evidenced by this superb little panaderia. We walked in with curiosity, only to find the proprietors eager to have us try their fresh baked goods.

We poked back behind the counter where the very nice lady offered warm pastries: an elephant ear, 'melon' bread, and something resembling a strawberry muffin. Each was warm, soft, and very tasty. The aromas from breaking the melon bread were fantastic and mesmerizing. Nothing was too sweet though wouldn't know how the pastries would be different if at room temperature and slightly staled. Still, coming midday to La Estrella Nueva (The New Star) Panaderia is a nice (and very inexpensive) was to cap off a nice lunch at Langer's.

Oh, bonus pic of Langer's combo number 54: half corned beef, half pastrami. No coleslaw, no Russian dressing. Simply perfection on rye.

Glad to see you finally decided to pair Langer's two magical meats. Their pastrami is justifiably lauded, but that corned beef is also stellar. The rye is always perfect too, with crisp crusts and soft interiors.

honestly though, it got kind of heavy toward the end (and I only ate half!) I like the textural and flavoral contrast of coleslaw (russian dressing not so much). Some slathered mustard helped too, but it took too much away from the pristine meat.
