Best Fish Taco in Ensenada? We're not in Ensenada.

Besides being a bit long-winded for a taco shop, this sign borders on ridiculous with its statement of being the best fish taco in Ensenada. Sure buddy. We're in LA, last time I checked. I've heard about this place for many months now with the intention of visiting it over the past couple weeks. I was there last week after I went to LACMA and it was closed. This time around they were open past their regular closing time of 8PM. Why were they open? Well a quick answer from the proprietor was: "well it depends if I'm drinking. With enough tequila, I'm open until 10:30."

I'll be sure to bring him a bottle of Don Julio next time I'm here. Anyways to the food. First, they have exactly three things on their menu: fish taco, shrimp taco, and drink. $1.50, $2.00, and $1.00. That's the kind of menu I love. Since I was extremely hungry I ordered three fish tacos and a soda. Some of my dining cohorts were smart enough to get the $1.00 horchata, which was syrupy and sweet.

You make your own taco at BFTIE, with well-shredded cabbage and a bevy of salsas at your disposal. As recommended by the portly owner, I put on some fresh avocado salsa, pickled radish, and crema. Together they compiled the tastiest, freshest, most delicious fish taco I've ever had. It was so good I completed the meal with an additional shrimp taco, which was equally fresh.

I finished off with the coconut macaroon, which reminded me of the taro cookies I get in Thai Town. I'll be returning here often, maybe twice a month. I may not go to Senor Fish any longer, my usual mainstay for fish tacos.

Forgive the bad picture, I recently downgraded from my preferred 50mm DSLR to this 1.5mm camera phone. Phoeey!
